Building on the success of its London debut in 2017, our Social Housing exhibition opened on 15 February in New York City. With the largest collection of models ever assembled in the Center for Architecture’s galleries, the show is one of the first of its kind in the city and expands the European social housing debate with new additions and learning resources created for North American audiences.
In a country with a very different tradition, culture and vocabulary for delivering housing, Karakusevic Carson Architects commissioned new films and features so the variety of European housing approaches can be made accessible. In the expanded exhibition, interviews with studios in London, Amsterdam, Vienna and Paris provide an urban context for new housing and reveal how cities and their respective political and delivery dynamics determine the projects they create.
Alongside films, the exhibition features a resource lounge with key publications and press, while in the main gallery new comparative statistics takes an analytical approach to the eight countries covered by the book. With a bold and easy to get graphic style it compares populations, dwelling types and national delivery trends so that New Yorkers can at a glance understand some of the key similarities and differences in social housing production across Europe.
The New York exhibition is accompanied by a season of events through February to May 2018.
